Diwali thali tradition and its significance

Thali (a tray) is considered a sacrosanct item for Indians. When one is praying to God, thali is rotated in your hand with a lit camphor emitting sparks of fire. Women also use it to welcome their daughters-in-law or sons-in-law by giving them an aarti pooja.

Apart from poojas, now thalis also are used during diwali and other festivals to fill it with sweets which are prashads or prasadams (lord’s food). Diwali thalis contain sweets which are considered as sacred as prasads. Since Diwali is an auspicious day for embarking on new ventures, Diwali thalis with sweets are distributed among friends and relatives for one’s prosperity

Diwali Thali types and method for making it

Diwali thalis for this festival are part of the celebrations. These thalis which are used for aartis are simple to make. The materials needed are petals of a nice flower, leaves, flowers, poster, glue, white paper, beads and sequins. Cover the thali using white paper. Stick it with glue. Using the petals, create a thick border around the edge of the thali. Place a flower in the center, and then the leaves should be arranged neatly around the flower. The leaves could be painted in floral patterns. Let the thali dry.

Made- to-order silver Diwali thalis are available also in market. Though they might be expensive, it will be useful to those who do not have the time to design a thali. These ready thalis have now become a big market. Cashing on this boom, several cottage industries have started their own outfits to prepare stylized thalis. Then they sell it to the bigger merchants. The investment is also less here.

Mithai diwali thalis are popular too. They can be decorated using golden tissue flowers, mirrors laced in red colour and where a silver coin is put in the center. The thali can consist of sweets like barfi, peda, ras malai, ros gulla, etc. Fancy thalis, which are made of velvet, cane, can also be used in place of tissue.
